What is Inflammaging?
The term "inflammaging" describes a state of low-grade, chronic systemic inflammation associated with advancing age. In ophthalmology, scientific evidence suggests that this latent inflammatory state may contribute to the progressive deterioration of ocular tissues, altering the homeostasis of barriers, vessels, and cellular complexes over time.
1. Advanced Glycation
AGEs accumulation alters proteins. In the eye, it correlates with progressive clouding of the lens (cataract).
2. Oxidative Stress
Imbalance between ROS and antioxidants promotes damage. Associated with the appearance of macular alterations and drusen.
3. Cellular Senescence
Senescent cells promote a pro-inflammatory microenvironment (SASP). Studied in relation to glaucoma.
4. Gut-Eye Axis
Translocation of bacterial metabolites can alter the ocular surface, exacerbating conditions of dry eye and adnexal inflammation.
The Modulation
Understanding the mechanisms underlying inflammaging opens new clinical perspectives. The adoption of appropriate lifestyles, the control of metabolic risk factors, and targeted nutritional approaches act as a "soothing" action. They can help modulate this inflammatory component, usefully integrating conventional ophthalmological therapies.
Ocular Nutrition
Nutritional supplementation to support visual well-being.
Visual Longevity
Maintaining visual function in old age.
